We have some exciting projects going on this week.
  • In ELA, students are working on their summer reading postcard. In class, students are using the steps of the writing process to complete this assignment.
  • In Science, students continue to study the scientific method. Students completed a fun activity where they used pictures in a Google Slides presentation to show the steps for tying their shoes. This helped students better understand the procedure in a scientific experiment. Students will also be conducting their first experiment this week.
  • In Math class, students continue the Number Theory unit. Notes and study materials for this unit are posted in Google Drive in the Learning Center Notes 2016 folder. The location is Math Learning Center/Number Theory. Students also may want to review the major concepts on Khan Academy. This is a wonderful online tool with videos and practice problems. There will be a math test on Wednesday, 10/5.
  • In Social Studies, students' maps are due on Friday, 9/30.
In Learning Center, we are working on improving students' reading, writing, and math skills. One fun writing activity that we did as a class is called Building Blocks. Students begin with a very simple sentence and expand it by adding the following: when, size/color/feeling, place, and name. This activity really helps students write more descriptive sentences, and students will use this technique throughout the school year when they are working on classroom writing assignments. Here is a sample of one student's work:

Original sentence: The wind whistled.
New sentence: In the dead of the night, the wind howled fearlessly through the buildings and sands in the small town in the Sahara desert.

Important Dates:
9/30 Early Release Day
10/3 No School, Rosh Hashanah
10/5 Number Theory Test
10/10 No School, Columbus Day
10/12 No School, Yom Kippur

Welcome to Cluster 1. I am looking forward to getting to know all of the new students. High Rock is a wonderful school community, and I know that the students are going to love it! This page will give you weekly updates on assignments, projects, tests, and quizzes. Study guides for upcoming tests/quizzes will be posted in Google Drive in a folder called Learning Center Notes. Students will be given access to this folder next week. These documents will provide valuable information to help students prepare for tests/quizzes.
