The author may tell us these traits directly, but the author will often show us these traits in action. Our job as readers is to draw a conclusion - or infer - about the character's traits from what the character says, thinks, and does.  For the first two chapters find an action or quote that can be used to describe Lily and her family. Record the event/action/quote and infer what character trait a reader can infer and why.
